Engine Detaches from Coaches After Reversal Procedure at Thakurganj, Train Delayed for Nearly Two Hours, Train Number 15716.
A major railway mishap was narrowly avoided in the early hours of Wednesday near Thakurganj Railway Station in Bihar. During a diversion on an alternate route due to ongoing railway infrastructure work, the train underwent an engine reversal procedure before continuing its journey.
Shortly after departure, the coupling connecting the locomotive and passenger coaches reportedly failed, causing the engine to separate from the rest of the train. The incident occurred at low speed, preventing what could have been a serious accident. The train had already arrived behind schedule and was being redirected through an alternate route. Following the reversal operation, the locomotive was attached to the opposite end of the train to proceed in the required direction. Preliminary information suggests that the coupling lock did not engage properly, leading to the separation.
Passengers experienced panic when the coaches came to an abrupt halt with a loud jolt in the darkness. Many travelers, including women, children, and elderly passengers, stepped out onto the tracks amid confusion. Railway staff and technical teams responded quickly, secured the train, and restored operations after necessary inspections.
No injuries or casualties were reported. Authorities have initiated a technical investigation to determine the exact cause of the coupling failure and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
